ANCIENT ARGOS THEATRE
The ancient argos theatre had a capacity of about 20,000 seats, the largest ancient theatre in Greece. It overlooked the ancient city and was visible from the Argolic gulf. Built during the hellenic time, in the early third century BC, it replaced the oldest theatre in town, which was placed about 100m to the south and was built in the fifth century BC probably to host music and drama contests during panhellenic Nemean ganes, which were transeffed definitively to the town of Argos from the sanctuary of Zeus and Nemea. In 2004, they completed fixing, restoration and conservation. Today, the theatre occasionally houses of cultural events.

Festivals
The Kronia- On the 12th of July of the Hekatombaian. The Kronia which is new year, is celebrated in honor of Kronos who was the father of zeus. Kronos received an offering on this day. An unusual event happened on this day, slaves dined with their masters. Apparently the slaves caused chaos during their time off throughout the city.
The Synoikia- On July 16th of the Hekatombaian. A festival to remind people of their history and origins. The festival sometimes lasted one or two days. A risk made by the Athenians in late classical times to peace may have been planned at the same time as the Synoikia.
The Greater Panathenaia- On July 23rd trough the 29th. The premeir festival of the Athenian year, the Panathenaia was the celebration of the birthday of the city. Beginning in the 7th century BCE (before common era) the annual festivals the Panathenaia involved an incredible procession from outside of the city to the Aeropolis. The main purpose of the procession was to pass on the new peplos for the image of Athena. There were also musical competitions and poetry recitals of Homer. The winners recieved olive oil supposedly from the sacred olive tree of Athena. There were also parades with offerings and meat meals for everyone at the citys expense. In 566 BCE the athletic games were added to the festivals so that every fourth year the city judged and announced Panathenaia ta megala (Great Panathenaia) which are now what we call the Olympic games which almost all countries participate in every four years.

The Lyre
The people of ancient Argos had a special place for music. Many ancient Greek myths included musical instuments, especially the lyre. It was belived that the lyre was invented by the god Apollo.
The lyre was a string instrument. It was made from a tortoise shell with anywhere from three to twelve strings. The lyre was played with a pick. All the strings were strummed but the player would press don the strings he didn't want to be heard. The lyre was somewhat related to the harp.
